A snowstorm on the morning of Jan 16th 2007 left about 3-4 inches of snow and ice on the ground in Portland, Oregon. This is what happens to people with too much confidence in their 4WD and zero experience driving on icy snow. Video was taken around SW Salmon and 20th Avenue, which is pretty steep (to be fair).

@fiveMIRrOrs I grew up around the Great Lakes- and learned to drive in what I thought was all winter conditions UNTIL I moved to S.C. in 90. When it freezes and we get an ice storm all the roads are undriveable. You can have the baddest ass 4-W.D with the fattest tires and it is nothing but a big sled that can't be controlled. We stay home until it thaws which is usually the next day.

I was in Portland in April 2009 for the 150th Anniversary Celebration Concert of the St Mary's Academy and spent five days visiting many of the views shown in the video - Mulltnomah Falls, Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, Columbia River Gorge, wineries, restaurants, etc.. Portland is indeed a wonderful place and I would love to see it again!

Nice video that gives you a good feel for the city. For the folks commenting on the rain, we moved here from California and the rain really isn't that bad. Downpours are pretty rare, the rain is more of a constant drizzle. We kind of like the rain actually. It's a nice change, very relaxing and it makes you appreciate the awesome summer weather here that much more.

The Chinese Gardens are WAY cooler then he makes them sound. Especially at night. The Zoo is pretty fantastical. :) Powell's Book store is extremely cool. Even if you don't like reading. (Like me) And of course, the Saturday Market. You can seriously buy everything there. It's amazing, and definitely one of the best parts of Portland. :) Voodoo doughnuts. You havn't lived until you've had a penis shaped maple bar.

while biking is nice, the mayor of portland is spending 600 million on bike lanes, of which less than 2% of portlanders use, while cutting money for the portland police and the sewer project. Last time I checked 100% of the city used the police and i'm pretty tired of the williamette being too full of poop to safely swim in. in 2006 the willamette river was listed the third most endangered river in the united states. I guess oregon isn't as green as bike riders like to believe.

I started riding my bike to work about 5 months ago. It's relaxing, great exercise, cheap, doesn't take much more time (takes me 10 minutes to drive to work versus 20 minutes to ride my bike) and best of all leaves just about no carbon footprint with the exception of the original construction/shipping of the bike and regular maintenance - virtually no carbon footprint.

The whole thing weighs only around 40 KG (about 100 lb). This is a better vehicle for around a city. We should also increase density in cities to make trips shorter and more viable for bicycles. Sure there may still need to be cars to some degree, but if people think that we can use electric cars like now, forget it!

With a bicycle most of the energy involved is used in transporting its occupant. To power a car on electricity to go 30 miles, you could use the same electricity to power several appliances for a month. Its inefficient, and not feasable without gasoline.

Medium density housing, as in Europe encourages cycling. Electric trains, and bicycles can do most of the work of cars. Sure we may need small delivery trucks, and emergency vehicles in cities. Most people in Portland don't own snow chains as it rarely snows here. This was an interesting storm. Snow then freezing rain, then more snow. Only people who frequently go skiing on Mt Hood actually use studs or chains. These hills in Portland are steep too.

In a snow/ice storm, there will be stretches where you will have to drive drastically slower than the posted speed. Some drive too fast, some drives too slow. I'm more worried about drivers who are so focused on posted speed while driving on ice/snow.

We put the $ here when 98% of the commuters are sitting in stop and go traffic at well known bottlenecks for 35+ years. How can we say we really care about wasting energy? Portland is no longer clean, no longer uncongested, no longer prosperous, no longer the rose city is once was. That's a disgrace.

Yes. Streetcars are electric! Not all automobiles have been upgraded to environmentally standards yet. SUVs still pollute a lot. When the PCC came out in the middle to late 1930s, they were the first streetcars to handle handicapped passengers. No they did not have wheelchair lifts, but they did have good seats and they were quiet. When at all possible when traveling in a big city, we need ot quit being so dependalbe on private autos and start using public transportation.

Judging by the internets or street views, I still couldnt picture some of these other places being better or even just as good for that matter.
