Let me just say that the opening to the Lion King is probably one of the most beautiful, amazing sequences in all of the history of broadway musicals. I mean when I was watching it for the first time (a while ago) I was like "OMG I don't even need to see the rest. I got my money worth just from watching the opening" Amazing show even after all these years!

@notyouraveragething It's a good bet The Lion King will be playing on Broadway for years. It still averages over 99 percent capacity and grosses over $1.4 million a week (second only to Wicked). Since the stage musical began, Disney has grossed well over 3 billion dollars from The Lion King. How ironic that Julie Taymor (who is the genius behind Lion King on Broadway) may ultimately be remembered for the flop that is Spiderman

yup it's still on broadway! I live in Las Vegas and it is the 1st show to ever come to Las Vegas and not change to the typical 1 1/2 hour vegas type show. They determined that there were no pieces able to be dropped. It still runs its full length even in Vegas which says a lot about the show!

Can't believe it's been 12 years since this performance, seems like I can remember it like it was last year. Took me seven years to finally see the show (caught it in 2004 in San Francisco) and I was blown away. I can honestly say the opening scene is the greatest opening of any Broadway show. (I had the chance to see it the previous year in New York but chose Phantom - that was a tough choice.)

I don't think they could have done it any better anywhere! Everyone did a fabulous job--from the performers to the light and sound technicians. I wouldn't hesitate to see the traveling version again. It was STUNNING!!!

I cannot stress how much you need to see it on Broadway its worth the steep ticket price. I saw the traveling version a year after when it came to Maryland, and it just was NOT anywhere as good. The performers are not as consistent, all of the isle and balcony stuff was missing. It just didn't feel like they went 'all out' as they did on Broadway. Of course thats why the tickets are $150 more than the traveling version (which were also pricey at $75). SEE IT. Its life changing.

Absolutely amazing a sight to behold. Takes my breath away every time I see it. Thought the female singer who performed this on the 2008 Tony Awards show didn't have a strong enough voice to carry this song, but the female singer in this performance with a strong ,rich and powerful voice , truly does this great song justice. Saw TLK in London with my family. My kids grew up on this movie, and so it was a special treat and pleasure to see it on stage. Fantastic performance, so incredibly moving and beautiful. We had front row centre seats, and the giraffes' heads were literally in our laps at one point! A superlative night at the theatre!

Actually only one of them is also in Lion King II - "He Lives in You." Additionally, 3 songs from the album "Rhythm of the Pride Lands" were rearranged and given lyrics to fit into the musical - "Lea Halalela" became Shadowland, and "Lala" became Endless Night, along with HLIY - to which the lyrics were changed slightly. Since the Broadway Musical (1997) came before TLK II (1998) the producers thought that HLIY would make a great opening for the movie, and it did :)

I Was lucky enough to see the original cast. I then dragged 2 friends to NY to see it 3 years ago and was completely disappointed. You can check out the the difference btw. this Vid. and their 2008 performance on the tonys. I'm so sorry that Jason Raize, the original Simba committed suicide.
