WHY OH WHY DID THEY CLOSE THIS SHOW???? >=/ I know that they didn't want competition between beauty and the beast, mermaid, and lion king but (no offense to mermaid fans) Little Mermaid didn't even last that long...Please Disney bring this show back I'm begging you...i plan to see the Networks production but ive seen videos and it is clear that the visual effects are no where near as "mind blowing" plz disney give the fans a revival!

In 1994 I went to a near by town. I watched this Broadway play. It was really good. I actually been there to see it. I enjoyed the whole play. I went with my whole class. I wish I could see it again. I know another girl plays Belle now. It's Cristy Carson Romano who is Bella today.

Terrence Mann was amazing in this. He doesn't suck at all. I saw him in The Addams Family and he was fantastic. He waved to me at the very end because I was sitting in the front row and he saw me smiling basically the entire time. And he talked to my aunt after because she danced onstage with him when she saw Cats. He is so kind.

I LOVE this show!!! I was like 3 when the Broadway production opened so I saw it when I was about 5 with Chuck Wagner and Kerry Butler. It made me want to be an actress and I'm still on that path today :-) I only saw that production one other time before it closed and I'm still VERY bummed about that. I DID see the new national tour last month and I LOVED IT!!! It's like a loving revisit of an old friend. You guys should see it if you have the chance. And I agree, Bring Beauty & the Beast back!

@Xfactories If this is the only recording you've heard of him as Beast, I'd highly recommend you find the album version or some of the other bootlegs before making a call like that. One, the recording here is... pretty bad. The tape it was taken from didn't seem to be in that great of shape, and the transfer to digital did it no favors. And two, Mann always did sound a bit head-cold-y here to me... As for Javert, I think he did a fine job considering he was quite young when it was recorded.

It was actually Tim Rice who wrote the lyrics for this song, not Howard. Howard died before the movie was released and of course before the new music for the musical was written.

Amazing video! Poetry in motion! I was lucky enough to get the part of Belle in my school musical but sadly, we're not doing this song since we have to save on time. I'm secretly a little bit relieved 'cause I'd really have to push myself to sing this properly, but I'd still be happy to give it a try anyway. I think I'm going to have my singing coach play this on the Piano and I'll try singing it at my next lesson. Anyway, awesome video! 5 stars! : )

Good for you for doing this part at 14. Did I catch that right, that you were Toby on Broadway? There is an aspect of Maurice that is child-like (note not childish). He is naive, innocent but also thinks he is bit wise. Think about some of the eccentric mentors you have had in school or career, and mimic one of them. Your part is there also for comic relief, so there there is nothing wrong with playing it a bit big, but don't be as big as lefou. See also some of my previous posts. Break a Leg!

Thanks. Look at the comments I left for seasons... You can also try to be very animated (it is based on a cartoon) Look in a mirror as you move, make the movements bid and accentuated, but in your character. If it feels too big you are doing it right. Let your director know what you are doing. They will pull you back if you get to big. Also look at the moment Belle and I did at 'quite rightly' in the song. Wear a weding ring, and think of the sadness of losing someone close to you. Break a leg

Too bad about the song. So build up your character of Maurice, milk the lines, add mumbling and lots of head motions. But most of all, while you are excentric, the audience must believe you ARE Belle's father and that you and her have a special relationship because you are both 'odd'. Other irony. Don't pay attention to the hag, but don't annoy the beautiful enchantress. Fall in love with someone ugly because they are beautiful inside, their reward is to become beautiful on the outside (vs. people accepting them for what they are). Belle and her fathers separation anxiety, but as soon as she finds her prince, its so-long dad. (but I think thats what Change in me is supposed to tell, the actual acceptance of separation of Belle and her father by her finally maturing.)

It probably has to do with the fairytale depicting Belle as a blonde. Disney just decided to change her hair color to brown. The same thing happened with Christine in The Phantom of the Opera in the ALW version. She is a blonde in Gaston Leroux's novel, but in the stage show (and movie version of the stage show) she is a brunette.

He did play Gaston before he played the Beast, but I'm fairly certain he's not playing Gaston in this video. To my knowledge, Steve never played Gaston to Andrea McArdle's Belle (though on that, *I* could be wrong :0D). He did, however, play the Beast for over a decade (11 years when the show closed on B'way), so it's entirely possible that this is him. I was sold when I heard his 'If I Can't Love Her' on his album. It sounds just like this. I believe it's posted on his website. :0) Cheers!

Beauty and the Beast is such a classic how could they get rid of it? How sad for the cast being together for a long time and then ending. I know when I am in a play that lasts for 2 months it's hard to say goodbye. They need to bring Beauty and the Beast back!

Ive never heard the overture before. Its suprising what Disney keeps from licensing, because its not in the version available for licensing from MTI. It just starts with the prologue.

Well i hope you guys do well. When i played for our middle school production this past May the music was very difficult (Way too many sharps) but i think we did well (considering we dont use strings at our school a tuba a sax a bassoon and a Barri sax i believe, and I on my trombone had to play the bass part) only had problems with the battle. Im hoping to have a video of it sometime soon.

Well, it's been three years and never came back. Wishing and hoping for things does not make them come true and only leads to further sadness and disappointment. It is best to accept that B&B is no longer on Broadway and move on. There's a bunch of good shows that are still playing and opening all the time.

Nope...I still have my Playbill. Barbour was the Beast with the Original LA Cast before coming to NY. Blanchard was the Beast in Toronto before becoming Broadway's Gaston (he was the first actor to play both roles)...He took over from Barbour at the Lunt. Hope that's helpful! :)

Not sure when this originally aired but it mentions the nine Tony Award nominations but not the wins, which makes me think it aired sometime shortly before the 48th Tony Awards which aired on June 12, 1994.
