i've seen this show in san diego a long time ago. it has a few scenes with great special effects that i still can't figure out how they did. the transformation of the beast at the end is amazing.

this was the first Broadway show I ever saw, and it was the one with SUSAN as Belle!!! i still remember sitting on the edge of my seat mesmerized by everything! It was a for a field trip for only a selective amount of students and i was one of them! i almost didn't because of the money, that's why i sold the crap out of candy bars! so worth it, it was one of my best middle school memories!

I've never seen this on Broadway, but I saw it in a theatrical college/university in California. I'll tell you what, those kids have what it takes to actually be on Broadway, no doubt. And they performed the show very well, it was Broadway to me! I should know, I've been to CATS and Phantom of the Opera. :)

Nope...I still have my Playbill. Barbour was the Beast with the Original LA Cast before coming to NY. Blanchard was the Beast in Toronto before becoming Broadway's Gaston (he was the first actor to play both roles)...He took over from Barbour at the Lunt. Hope that's helpful! :)

He did play Gaston before he played the Beast, but I'm fairly certain he's not playing Gaston in this video. To my knowledge, Steve never played Gaston to Andrea McArdle's Belle (though on that, *I* could be wrong :0D). He did, however, play the Beast for over a decade (11 years when the show closed on B'way), so it's entirely possible that this is him. I was sold when I heard his 'If I Can't Love Her' on his album. It sounds just like this. I believe it's posted on his website. :0) Cheers!

Amazing video! Poetry in motion! I was lucky enough to get the part of Belle in my school musical but sadly, we're not doing this song since we have to save on time. Good, just one thing When you are sining, try opening the back of your throat more. Kind of like when you are yawning. That way, you won't get as much of a nasal voice Good for first play though!

I really love your high notes, you hit them naturally and it doesn't seem to be a strain. Your voice is quite pretty and nice to listen to - the only criticism I would give is that you need more experience, but I'm sure you're already working on that! Keep it up!

Well i hope you guys do well. When i played for our middle school production this past May the music was very difficult (Way too many sharps) but i think we did well (considering we dont use strings at our school a tuba a sax a bassoon and a Barri sax i believe, and I on my trombone had to play the bass part) only had problems with the battle. Im hoping to have a video of it sometime soon.

You can also try to be very animated (it is based on a cartoon) Look in a mirror as you move, make the movements bid and accentuated, but in your character. If it feels too big you are doing it right. Let your director know what you are doing. They will pull you back if you get to big. Also look at the moment Belle and I did at 'quite rightly' in the song. Wear a weding ring, and think of the sadness of losing someone close to you. Break a leg

Too bad about the song. So build up your character of Maurice, milk the lines, add mumbling and lots of head motions. But most of all, while you are excentric, the audience must believe you ARE Belle's father and that you and her have a special relationship because you are both 'odd'. Other irony. Don't pay attention to the hag, but don't annoy the beautiful enchantress. Fall in love with someone ugly because they are beautiful inside, their reward is to become beautiful on the outside (vs. people accepting them for what they are). Belle and her fathers separation anxiety, but as soon as she finds her prince, its so-long dad. (but I think thats what Change in me is supposed to tell, the actual acceptance of separation of Belle and her father by her finally maturing.)

This upload is of the original Broadway cast recording. A Change in Me wasn't added to the show until 1999 when Toni Braxton got the role of Belle. A Change in Me was written specifically for Braxton, and so the song wasn't recorded in 1994 when the show debuted on Broadway. Susan Egan did, however, recorded a copy of the song on her album 'So Far...' :) Hope that helps!
